Blog #8: Could this be the best way to watch film?

August 2014

The very first open air cinemas appeared on the scene in Germany in 1961 - yes, your parents and grandparents were probably doing this before you! Now fast forward to 2014, and we’re in the midst of one of the most popular years on record for outdoor cinema. These weird and wonderful viewing experiences have been cropping up all over the UK showing everything from all-time favourites, cult classics and the latest releases.

There’s something very exciting about grabbing your popcorn and picnic blankets and enjoying a film under the night sky, even if it is to laugh at the crude joke of the Inbetweeners or sob along to Ghost. We’ve been having a look at some of the very best open air cinemas, and have put together a list of some you definitely need to visit!

Quite possibly our favourite outdoor cinema! Described by The Evening Standard as ‘London’s Best Outdoor Cinema’, the Nomad is a pop up cinema currently working its way round some of London’s most beautiful and intriguing locations.

You can pretty much watch almost anything at The Nomad, their listings are boasting everything from all our classic, cult, indie and mainstream favourites. Londoners are living in mystery as this remarkable cinema appears in town, and then disappears by morning leaving not a trace!

The Rooftop Film Club is a group of outdoor cinemas situated across London. Film fanatics are flocking to one of their four cinemas to enjoy the best classic, cult and recent releases. You can enjoy the film from their big, comfy Director’s chairs (which you’ll instantly need to purchase for your own home!), complete with high quality wireless headphones and an enormous screen. What’s more - they have bar and food stands to keep you fed and watered throughout the film.
