SUMMER WINE CLUB DATES:
August- The thinking wine drinker's Classics. Wed 12 August 2009
With the big names in wine becoming more expensive and out of reach of people's pockets, we look at some more affordable alternatives that actually often taste better than their more illustrious originals.
Not Chablis but...Laroche Uoaked Chardonnay de la Chevaliere VdP d'Oc
Made by top Chablis producer Michel Laroche in the south of France where land and vines are far less expensive but produce equally as good Chablis style wines.
Crisp, fresh, and dry offering the pure expression of Chardonnay
Starter
Lobster Island, scallop ceviche, tomato consomme or
Roasted & Smoked peppers in Pratt's extra virgin rapeseed oil 'Pane con tomate'
Not Cloudy Bay but.....Wither Hills Rarangi Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc
Wither Hills Rarangi Sauvignon Blanc triumphed at the 2009 New Zealand Royal Easter, winning not only a Gold Medal, but also winning the Champion Sauvignon Blanc Trophy! A deep rich Kiwi Sauvignon with complex mineral undertones.
Not Chateauneuf du Pape but...Lirac Rouge Clos de Sixte Alain Jaume
From vineyards right next door to the fabled Chateauneuf area but producer at a fraction of the cost. Aromas of red & black ripe fruit with hints of liquorice & vanilla. Mouth-filling with aromas of blackcurrant liquor & spice. Harmonious & elegant tannins with a silky texture & an amazing complexity.
Maincourse
Wholeroasted local wood pigeon, newforest ceps, pancetta& sage, polenta or
Organic sunnyfield's Courgette galette, Aubergine caviar, runner bean 'spaghetti' Napoli
Not Sauternes but.....Glenguin Botrytised Semillon
From the hunter valley in Australia and made by a Scotsman, this little beauty rivals the best that the French have to offer in the dessert wine category. Deep gold, with aromas of honey, mandarin and butterscotch. Medium-bodied and sweet on the palate with notes of seville orange marmalade, honey and apricot with a wave of fresh, zingy lemony acidity on the finish.
Afters
'Berry tasty plate' Newforest berries three ways or
Isle of Wight soft, fudge crackers, runner bean chutney
September Pinot Noir. Wed 09 September 2009
Ok it's the middle of the summer and we don't want anything too heavy. We take a look at the versatile, wonderful and sometimes elusive Pinot Noir grape variety. Responsible for making the world's most expensive wines, it is sometimes delicate, often beguiling, but never dull.
Charles de Fere Cremant de Bourgogne Brut
Ok not 100% Pinot noir (about 65%), but a cracking champagne style sparkler.
Deep golden in colour with pink hues. Complex aromas of toast, dried fruit, ginger bread and vanilla. Rounded mouth feel with a full and long lasting finish.
Les Nuages Pinot Noir Rose Loire France
Deliciously balanced and fruit-filled rose with great wild strawberry character and a fresh, appetizing finish. Les Nuages sums up exactly what the Loire is all about; limey, nettley fruit with refreshingly moderate alcohol levels and a wash of thirst-quenching acidity.
Spy Valley Marlborough Pinot Noir New Zealand
Named after the satellite listening post located over the road from the winery, Spy Valley is in the Waihopai Valley in Marlborough. Happily for us they appear more interested in fine wine than exploding cigars, and recent vintages have seen the winery's trophy cabinet filled to bursting. Gorgeous, dark red fruit aromas, a chocolatey note on the palate and a sumptuous, smooth finish.
Marmesa Red Harvest Dessert Pinot Noir California
Yes that's right a Pinot Noir Dessert Wine!! Delicious It’s beautiful and unusual pale salmon colour, elegant aromas of luscious strawberry, & a combination of
summer pudding and Seville orange marmalade flavours are just the beginning!
